The "Manipur Institute of Technology" (formerly known as Government College of Technology) is a Constituent College of Manipur University created by an act of Parliament, called ‘Manipur University Act. 2005’and run under Manipur University Ordinance B-17.It is being maintained by the Manipur University out of the funds made available to it by the UGC. It came into existence as Government College of Technology(GCT) on 28 August 1998 with 3 (three) engineering disciplines viz.Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Civil Engineering for the promotion of higher technical education in the state. Classes of the 1st batch were started from 16 December 1998.
The approved intake capacity as per AICTE is 115 (one hundred and fifteen) students per year.The campus is located at Takyelpat at a distance of 5 km from the heart of Imphal and 6 km. from the Imphal Airport.The Academic Building and other infrastructures are being developed in the Manipur University Campus.
The Institute is now covered under AICTE-NEQIP scheme for 3 (three) years for Institutional development vide sanction letter no. AICTE/UB/36/NEQIP/ Mani/Deg/ MIT/18/2013/260 dated 30/01/2014.

About the City
The city of Imphal is the capital of Manipur. The ruins of the Palace of Kangla, the royal seat of the erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur, are in the city centre, surrounded by a moat. Imphal came to prominence during the Second World War when the Japanese entered India and waged war over the area. Imphal is located between 24°49’N & 24°82’N latitude and 93°57’E & 93°95’E longitude. It is the centre of all cultural, commercial and political activities of the state. Situated at an average altitude of 786 m above the sea level, Imphal has moderate temperature. Summer is from April to June, monsoon from July to September, post monsoon from October to November and winter from December to March. Summer has a temperature range of 17°C to 36°C and in winter, minimum can touch down to freezing subzero temperature.
Weather
The night and day temperature in Imphal ranges between 13°C to 31°C during March.
How to reach MIT Imphal
The campus is around 3 km from the heart of Imphal City. The nearest airport is located at a distance of 5 km from the campus. Imphal is directly connected by air with Guwahati, Kolkata, Delhi, Aizwal, and Agartala. Imphal is connected by road with Dimapur by National Highway 2 and Silchar by National Highway 37. The nearest railway station is Dimapur and it takes around 8 hrs by bus from Dimapur to reach Imphal.
